TRAINER: MICK PRICE
Mick Price needs very little introduction. He is one of Australia’s top trainers and has trained numerous Group 1 winners throughout his very successful career. In more recent years, the likes of Lankan Rupee, Samaready, Tarzino, Grunt, Mighty Boss, and 2 fillies I had a hand in selecting, Secret Agenda and Seabrook, just to name a few horses from his 37 Group 1 victories. PER INCANTO (USA) - Street Cry x Pappa Reale - 2004 Bay or Brown Horse 16.1HH
With just four crops of racing age, and those conceived from service fees of just $4,000 and $5,000, the impact Per Incanto has made on the racetracks of New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore has been remarkable, and in the process confirming the group winning sprinting son of Street Cry as one of New Zealand's most in demand young stallions.
Champion New Zealand First Season Sire by winners and runner-up in the 2YO Sires Premiership for 2014/15, Per Incanto annexed the Champion New Zealand 3YO Sire by winners and the Champion Second Season Sire by winners titles in 2015/16, defeating none other than Savabeel for the former award.
Per Incanto finished the 2016/17 season inside the Top 10 of the NZ Sires Premiership, comfortably the highest ranked sire with three crops of racing age, while only Savabeel and Darci Brahma had more 3YO winners. It's been exciting to see that momentum continue in the 2017/18 season with six new stakes winners and finishing fifth on the General Sires Premiership.
In 2016/17, his leading 3YO's included Saracino, a three time Group 2 winner during the season with wins over older horses in the Group 2 Foxbridge Plate as well as the Group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington and the Group 2 Wellington Guineas, Listed winner It's A Kind Of Magic, Group 1 1000 Guineas place-getter Sweepstake and promising sprinter Don Carlo, who won seven races from fifteen starts.
What’s becoming very apparent is the ability of his progeny to train on. A Group 1 winner as a 2YO and dual Group placed in Melbourne as a spring 3YO, Dal Cielo won twice in Sydney in 2017, placed second at Group 3 level over the Championships and is winning city races in Australia in 2018. More recently, Santa Monica and Shadows Cast became Per Incanto's second and third Group 1 winners with strong wins in the Group 1 SISTEMA RAILWAY Stakes and the Group 1 HARCOURTS THORNDON MILE respectively.
A promising 3YO in NZ, Lanciato has gone to a new level in Sydney, winning consecutive black-type events. In fact four of Per Incanto’s new stakes winners for 2017/18 are 5YO's: Lanciato, Shadows Cast, who dead-heated for first in the Group 2 Couplands Bakery Mile, Central Districts star Dolcetto who won the Group 3 Merial Mile, and the listed winner Magnum. Per Incanto's other new stakes winners in 2017/18 are the Queensland 'star' Amanaat, the winner of eight of his last nine starts, and the mare Indecision.
In Hong Kong, two of the most progressive horses in 2017/18 were his 4YO sons Time To Celebrate and Morethanlucky who've won 10 races between them with the latter also running third in the listed Hong Kong Classic Mile.
Per Incanto’s popularity in the sale ring continued in 2018.
At Karaka he was the third leading NZ based sire on averages
in Book 1 behind Savabeel and Tavistock with 12 yearlings
selling for an average of $160k, while his colt from Lago Rider
fetched $200k to top the Book 2 prices. Australian buyers
showed their confidence in the son of Street Cry, with his four
yearlings at Sydney Classic averaging $136k, making him the
leading NZ based sire.
2018 8 Yearling Sales 42 Yearlings Sold Average $100k
With that hugely impressive line-up of existing racing talent and
the produce of his substantially upgraded books of mares set to
debut in the next couple of seasons, Per Incanto's continued
ascent up the ranks of New Zealand’s leading stallions is assured.
Bearing a close physical resemblance to his own sire, Street Cry,
standing 16.1 hands and the same dark bay coat, Per Incanto is a
simply outstanding individual - athletic, with an incredibly attractive head and outlook.
